Of course today we can only have a limited idea as to how house music may have sounded and what form it took in the home of the Schumanns. The Calmus Ensemble provides a sketch of one such possible evening, and risks a look through the keyhole: One sat in a smaller circle together and the invited guests formed a small vocal ensemble for the purpose of sight-reading and singing the newest vocal compositions. Schumann and his wife played their newest pieces at the piano. Johannes Brahms was probably also there and brought his own music with him. And surely, occasionally the music of Johann Sebastian Bach was also heard.
